Ghulam Mohammad Baksh, better known by the ring name The Great Gamma was a world heavyweight champion. He was undefeated in his entire career and considered as greatest wrestler of all time. The Great Gama is also known as Rustam-e-Hind.

Gamma was born in 1889 in Holipura, Datia. However there is a dispute over his birth, some believe that he was born in 1880 in Amritsar, Punjab. He had two wives. one in Pakistan and the other in Baroda, India. At age of 10 year, he took participate in strongman competition held in Jodhpur. The contest was attended by many wrestlers and Gama was among the last fifteen. The King(Maharaja) of jodhpur declared Gamma as the winner. After that Gama was subsequently taken into training by the Maharaja of Datia.

After that at age of 19 years, Gamma defeated one of the most famous wrestlers from India. By 1910, Gama had defeated all the famous indian wrestlers who faced him.

om participating in the riots. Gama got angry over this and declared that he could beat any wrestler in thirty minutes. For a long time no one came forward to accept the challenge then Gama presented another challenge to specific heavyweight wrestlers. He would beat them or and if he did not do that he would return to India by rewarding the winning wrestler. American Benjamin Roller was first professional wrestler who accepted gamma challenge and Gamma defeated him in 10 minutes. After benjamin Roller, He defeated 12 wrestlers and thus organizers had to give gamma entry to official tournament.

On 10 September 1910, Stanislaus Zbyszko (leading wrestlers in the world) faced the Great Gama in the finals of the John Bull World Championships in London. In a minute, Zbyszko was taken down and remained in that position for the remaining 2 hours and 35 minutes of the match and match tied.

On 17 September 1910, They were set to face each other again but Zbyszko didn’t show up and Gama was announced victor.

Shortly after his return from England, Gamma Faced Raheem Bakhsh Sultani Wala ( Famous wrestler in India ). this bout eventually ended the long struggle between the two pillars of Indian wrestling of that time in favour of Gama. Gamma won that match and title of Rustam-e-Hind. 

In 1917, Gama defeated Pandit Biddu who was one of the best wrestlers in India of that time.

In 1922, during a visit to India, the Prince of Wales presented Gama with a silver mace.

Gama did not have any opponents until 1927, when it was announced that Gama and Zbyszko would face each other again. They met in Patiala in January 1928. Zbyszko was defeated and Gamma won the World Wrestling Championship medal. After that match, Zbyszko called him a “tiger”.

Gamma defeated many champions in his 52 year career. After partition of india in 1947, he moved to pakistan and retired in 1952. In his entire career he was never defeated by anyone in the world.

The Great Gamma died in Lahore, Pakistan on 23 May 1960 after a period of illness.


  • In Breakfast, Gama’s daily diet was five kg of milk at one time and one hundred kilogram almonds with it.
  • Four dozen eggs and 2 kg of fruit after almond milk.

  • Used half a Kg of ghee for food everyday.

  • Two Dozen banana everyday.


Gamma Wrestler’s day to day training involve following

  • Five thousand squats (Baithaks)
  • Three thousand pushups (Dands)
  • Wrestling with forty of his fellow wrestlers in the arena.

He used stones as dumbbell to do exercise. Bruce lee was inspired by Gamma’s routine work.
