Significance of 108

The number’s significance is open to interpretation. But 108 has long been considered a sacred number in Hinduism and yoga. The number 108 has held a multi-dimensional meaning throughout history:

In mathematics:

  • Abundant number (an abundant number or excessive number is a number for which the sum of its proper divisors is greater than the number itself)
  • Semiperfect number (a semiperfect number or pseudoperfect number is a natural number n that is equal to the sum of all or some of its proper divisors)
  • Tetranacci number (tetranacci numbers start with four predetermined terms, each term afterwards being the sum of the preceding four terms. The first few tetranacci numbers are: 0, 0, 0, 1, 1, 2, 4, 8, 15, 29, 56, 108, 208, 401….)
  • The hyperfactorial of 3
  • Divisible by the value of its φ function, which is 3
  • Divisible by the total number of its divisors (12), hence it is a refactorable number
  • The angle in degrees of the interior angles of a regular pentagon in Euclidean space
  • Palindromic in bases 11 (9911), 17 (6617), 26 (4426), 35 (3335) and 53 (2253)
  • Harshad number in bases 2, 3, 4, 6, 7, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13 and 16 (a harshad number (or Niven number) in a givennumber base, is an integer that is divisible by the sum of its digits when written in that base)
  • Self number(A self number, Colombian number or Devlali number is an integer that cannot be written as the sum of any other integer n and the individual digits of n)
  • There are 108 free polyominoes of order 7
  • The equation  {\displaystyle 2\sin \left({\frac {108^{\circ }}{2}}\right)=\phi } results in the golden ratio (1.6180339887…)


In science:

  • 108 degrees Fahrenheit is the internal temperature at which the human body’s vital organs begin to fail from overheating
  • The distance of Earth from the Sun is about 108 times the diameter of the Sun (actually closer to 107.51, as per definition of the AU). Actual ratio varies between 105.7 (Perihelion) and 109.3 (Aphelion)
  • The distance between the earth and the moon is 108 times the moon’s diameter
  • A leap year displays 366 days, and 3 x 6 x 6 gives 108


Religion and the arts:

  • In some schools of Buddhism, it is believed that there are 108 defilements
  • In Jain tradition is believed that they are 108 virtues
  •  The Vedanta, according to the Hinduism tradition, recognizes 108 authentic doctrines (Upanishad) aiming to approach the Truth and to destroy Ignorance
  • There are said to be 108 energy lines, or nadis, converging to form the heart chakra
  • According to Chinese and Indian Martial Arts: Marma Adi and Ayurveda, there are 108 pressure points in a human body
